Mother’s day falls on May 13th this year (2012). Have you bought or planned something special for your mom, to make this day memorable for you and her?
The price of carnation has doubled during this special day, since getting carnation for mother has become such a common practice on this special occasion. Besides getting the traditional gifts of getting and candy, why not do something different this year. Consider collaborating with your siblings, contribute in effort or/and finance, and come out with a gift together.

Surprise Her
Think about what your mom loves most. Your wonderful surprise may involve anything from an oversized balloon, a bouquet, a new oven, a feast at a cozy restaurant, a holiday trip, a cruise for her and a companion?
If your mom loves to cook in the kitchen, and longs for a new kitchen for a long time, send her for a holiday trip and get the kitchen renovated, and surprise her when she returns.
Make it Personal
Very often, it isn’t about how big or expensive the gift is. Mothers love it when they are appreciated and honoured in personal ways, from a simple hand-made cards and gifts, to personalized cookbook, memory album, and framed photos.
What could be better to please your mom with a photo montage of her life? Remember to include photos such as baby photos of yourself and your siblings, photos of your dad, her wedding photo, memorable events and vacations, and family milestones. Spend Quality Time Together
If you have not seen your mom for months, nothing meant as much to her as your presence to spend quality time with her. You can rent a projector and celebrate the special day with watching collection of her favourite classic films, new releases and home movies of family.
Both of you can also go for a planned holiday trip to a far-away place. It can be a relaxing holidays by a beach, or go for a shopping spree !

A very simple but most special gift you can give your mom is a framed photo – but not just any photos ! Make it a memorable photograph, whether it is a photo of her mother, a restored old photo from her wedding day, or a photo of the two of you.

Simple Ways to Show Appreciation to Your Mom
There are many ways you can show appreciation to your mom and still touch her heart. Here is how :
1. Express your love to her
“I love you, Mom.” Make her feel loved and appreciated for everything she does for you. You can say it verbally with an affectionate hug. If you are far away, send her a card with well-thought messages of love and appreciation.
2. Write a simple letter
Nowadays, since emailing and facebooking has replaced postal mail, receiving a hand-written letter has become something unusual and come as a pleasant surprise. Write a letter with feelings on how you appreciate and love your mom, present it or post it to her. Write about how she enlightens your day, how some of the things she did has made a different in your life, and how important she is to you. If you present it to her, you can either read it out to her, or give it to her to read. We often forget to tell our moms how much we care and appreciate them, so Mother’s day is our good opportunity.
3. Give her flowers
Giving her flowers or a bouquet is a simple and wonderful way to make Mother’s day special. If she has a favourite flower or colour, choose the flowers she likes, instead of buying carnations.
4. Make her breakfast
Wake up earlier than usual and prepare breakfast for her before she gets up. Surprise her with breakfast in bed! Find out what her favourite breakfast is and cook it for her, she will appreciate your effort.
5. Hang out with your mom
As a parent grows older, she may feel that the connection between you and her has become distant, especially if you are often busy with work and your own family. You can re-establish this connection by spending this special day hanging out with your mom. Do something both of you enjoy together, such as go for a day shopping spree, chit-chat at a café, watch a concert, or go for a movie.
Other ideas
If you are stumped for ideas, consider something as simple as preparing her favourite meals, bring her out for dinner at a nice restaurant, go for a coffee and cake at her favourite café, or host the Mother’s Day celebration at your place, so that she won’t have to worry about cleaning up the house or cooking for the family.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to show how much you appreciate and love your mother. The quality of thought behind the gift is worth far more than the amount of money you spent on it.
